Independent travellers usually don't want to have too much stuff arranged when heading to the mountains. It is a misconception though that you don't need a porter on your trekking in India. Treks in India can be really tough if you were to carry around your 15 to 20 kg rucksack / trekking bag yourself. Also when you are joined by younger or elderly people, hiring a guide and / or porter is the best thing to do. For your own sake and also to stimulate the Indian economy we can strongly recommend to get a guide and or porter from a registered travel agency in Siliguri. Be aware that you are providing work to an uneducated and often poor farmer, who can do with some extra money to feed his family.

Furthermore, it is always useful to have someone watch your pack when you have to run into the bushes or even when you are in a lodge and go out to the toilet. Or in case you injure yourself or an illness occurs it is will handy to have somebody around to take care of you. Please don't think you will find a porter whenever you need one in the mountains. In the price we will give, food + accommodation insurance will be included.
